Marketing and public relations have a funny reputation among folks. Just like most people, this industry is either loved, hated or misunderstood. However recently, I found myself confused about why businesses (mostly small) market very little, inconsistently or not at all. Some wonder why they might be struggling with penetrating the market or increasing sales, however are afraid to spend money on marketing or simply do not see the importance. Now, I am not just saying all of this because it is my current field, MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS IS INTEGRAL TO THE OVERALL BUSINESS PLAN. One of my favorite people in life and business just does not get it. She thinks it is a bunch of crap. How funny is that? I would have to agree with her, there is a lot of crap in the market place- from bad design, to stupid ads, to poorly executed media relations. Regardless of all of the unpretty marketing and the exploitation from the media, we all still need to market and do so consistently. Here are four must do's when thinking about your marketing plan:
1. Create a plan by looking at your overall business plan (vision and goals)
2. Develop a realistic budget (should be between 10% -20% of your sales)
3. Be consistent, Be consistent, Be consistent- always market
4. Take risks, evaluate and adapt what is not working and know that it is okay to make mistakes
